About Our Work

The Family-Centered Care Taskforce drives collaboration between Family Partners, healthcare professionals, and researchers to strive for NICU environments where families are true partners in their baby’s care.

Why It Matters

Families are not visitors — they are essential members of the care team.

Every baby deserves care that integrates and respects the voice of their family. Yet too often, policies, systems, and practices exclude the very people who know their baby best. Our work focuses on:

  • Reducing disparities in care and outcomes
  • Ensuring family voices shape decisions at every level
  • Building health equity in neonatal care

“Thank you for all your hard work in engaging NICU teams all around the country on this Taskforce! Our unit has been able to share our FCC team’s efforts as well as availability of rich information-sharing that has helped us refine our family-centered care processes in our NICU.”

What We Do

Education

Through educational webinars, newsletters, and monthly articles, we work to bridge the gap between research and bedside practice.

Recognizing the importance of starting early, we are committed to introducing these principles at the beginning of healthcare professionals’ careers. To support this, we created the FCC Scholars program.

Advocacy & Policy

We champion Family-Centered Care at the national and international level by:

  • Supporting resolutions and policy statements that advance family integration in neonatal care
  • Encouraging professional societies to prioritize meaningful family involvement in clinical practice and guidelines
  • Partnering with organizations to amplify family voices and ensure they are represented in policy, education, and system-level change

Quality Improvement

We utilize a quality improvement methodology to advance FCC practices. Unless we measure where we currently stand in our FCC implementation, we cannot identify areas that need improvement.

In 2023, we launched a quality improvement initiative built on a small-group collaborative model. By collaborating with family partners ((NICU families who has had experience navigating the NICU), we are strengthening FCC practices in meaningful and measurable ways.

Research

How do we know we are truly delivering Family-Centered Care?

We advance FCC through collaborative research partnerships that move measurement from concept to practice. By uniting the expertise of our Executive Council members with leading organizations such as Stanford Impact Labs and NICU Parent Network, we are piloting benchmark FCC measures across NICUs in seven domains. Through this work, we are establishing meaningful standards, generating actionable data so that FCC is not just an intention, but a measurable and sustainable reality.
